You're already drinking coffee every morning. But if it's just caffeine with nothing behind it, you're leaving a lot on the table.

This simple seven-ingredient recipe takes two minutes to make, comes in under 185 calories, and delivers 12 grams of protein before you've eaten a single meal. Every ingredient earns its place.

The Recipe

  • 1 shot espresso

  • 1 cup coconut milk (small) or 1¼ cups (large)

  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts

  • 1/4 tbsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tbsp raw cacao powder

  • 1 date (~40 calories)

  • 10g protein powder (1/2 scoop)

  • 6 pistachios

Blend it all together. That's it.

Small: ~230 calories | ~12–13g protein | ~20.5g carbs | ~11.5g fat

Large: ~243 calories | ~12–13g protein | ~20.8g carbs | ~12.6g fat

Why It Works

Espresso delivers controlled caffeine, roughly 60–70mg which is enough to sharpen focus and boost fat oxidation without the afternoon crash.

Coconut milk is the base that brings everything together. It's dairy-free, clean, and creamy without being heavy — just 50 calories per cup with 4.5g of healthy fat. It gives the drink a smooth, latte-like texture that makes this feel like a treat rather than a functional beverage. Use 1 cup for a smaller drink or 1¼ cups if you want something more filling.

Hemp hearts are one of the most underrated additions to any morning drink. One tablespoon gives you 3.3g of protein and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a near-perfect ratio for fighting inflammation which is one of the biggest silent blockers of fat loss.

Cinnamon improves insulin sensitivity and slows gastric emptying, meaning the natural sugars from the date enter your bloodstream gradually. The result is steadier energy, fewer cravings, and no mid-morning crash.

The date sweetens the drink naturally and provides a clean hit of fast-acting carbohydrates that pairs with caffeine for sustained energy. At around 40 calories, it's extremely efficient for what it delivers.

Protein powder closes the protein gap most people don't even know they have at breakfast. I use Sprout Living's Epic Protein in Chocolate Maca which is organic, plant-based, no artificial anything, and the chocolate-maca flavor pairs perfectly with the cinnamon and date. Any clean protein powder works though, so use what you have.

Pistachios add magnesium, vitamin B6, and potassium which are three nutrients most people under-consume and plus a subtle creaminess that makes the whole drink more satisfying.

Raw cacao is the ingredient that ties the whole flavor profile together. Half a tablespoon adds barely 10 calories, but brings a rich dark chocolate depth along with a serious antioxidant and magnesium boost. It also pairs naturally with the Sprout Living chocolate maca protein, making this drink taste far more indulgent than the macros suggest.

Under 185 calories. Twelve grams of protein. Anti-inflammatory fats, blood sugar regulation, and clean sustained energy all in one drink. If your morning routine shapes the rest of your day, this is a good place to start.
